The Critical Care Medicine rotation is a two-month rotation during the CA-2 year of training. The rotation occurs at Emory University Hospital within the Intensive Care Units. At least one half of the experience during this rotation will be under the direct supervision and teaching of an Anesthesiologist who has specialized in Critical Care Medicine. The remaining experience will be under the supervision and teaching of Surgeons and/or Pulmonary Medicine Intensivist who have specialized in Critical Care Medicine. This rotation may be taken as an elective for one to three months duration during the CA-3 year. During the rotation the resident will become familiar with the management of patients in the intensive care unit setting. The resident will be expected to manage all aspects of the patient's care in the ICU in consultation with a faculty member. During the CA-2 year, one month is dedicated to the post operative management of patients who have had cardiothoracic procedures and the other month is dedicated to management of patients who have general medical problems or non cardiothoracic surgical procedures. The resident will become familiar with organ system approach to management of a patient in the ICU. The resident will learn interpersonal and communications skills, professionalism and ethics by emulating faculty members interacting with patients and patients families and other health care professionals. The CA-3 resident will be assigned to the more complex patients. The CA-3 resident will be expected to gain the experience necessary to manage patients with minimal faculty assistance.
