Regional Anesthesia Workshop
(March 25, 2006)

Objective of Workshop:

The objective of the workshop is to establish for each resident a knowledge base for performing all major nerve blocks using both the traditional nerve stimulation and ultrasound guided techniques.

Design of Workshop:

The workshop is divided into a morning and afternoon session.  The morning cession, held in the Emory University Hospital conference room, is subdivided into 6 modules including: Technical, Head and Neck, Upper Extremity, Chest, Lower extremity and Spine.  Each resident will receive a handout that covers major points of the morning session.  In order to get credit for participation, all the blank spaces must be filled in correctly.  Each module will consist of a combination of lecture, demonstration (live models, video etc.) and question and answer with the faculty.  In the afternoon the residents have an opportunity for hands on participation.  This will occur in the recovery room.  There will be 8 stations for residents to demonstrate their prowess.  Six of the stations are equipped with ultrasound equipment, a model and proctor.  The other two involve a phantom reproduction of a peripheral nerve for practice in guiding the block needle.  (Unfortunately, we cannot stick the models with the needles.  Please do not stick the human models with needles.) The first hour will be spent practicing your technique.  During the last 2 hours the residents will go through a checkout process to confirm their knowledge base.   Unfortunately, it is mandatory that the residents attend this workshop.
