The Regional Anesthesiology rotation is designed to give a concentrated period of time devoted to increasing skills in regional blocks for postoperative pain control and surgical anesthesia. The rotation is a minimum of two weeks in duration. Additional rotation time will be given to residents needing additional experience in regional block techniques or those electing additional experience during their CA-3 year.
- Increase knowledge and skills needed to perform various regional blocks.
- Learn the use of stimulators and monographs as an aid to placement of regional blocks.
- Gain specific proficiency in the placement of upper extremity blocks at various points along the brachial plexus.
- Gain specific proficiency in placement of lower extremity blocks including femoral, sciatic and popliteal nerve blocks.
- Become experienced in placement of diffusion blocks such as ankle blocks and fascia iliacus blocks.
- Learn the techniques to supplement blocks that may have inadequate effects.
- Become familiar with the cost containment advantages of regional analgesia.
- Increase knowledge of local anesthetics, their side affects and toxicities.
- Learn the management of toxic and anaphylactic reactions to local anesthetics.
- Increase knowledge of patient selection for a free standing Ambulatory Surgical Operating Suite.
