AMBULATORY SURGERY CENTER

The Ambulatory Surgery Center is located in Building B of The Emory Clinic on the Emory University Campus. The operating suite has six rooms that are used for more than 5,000 patients a year undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. It is designed exclusively for patients who are scheduled for surgery that does not require an overnight stay in the hospital. At the Ambulatory Surgery Center, residents gain experience in the management of patients who are discharged home after their procedure. The Anesthesia Team at the ASC is composed of highly trained health care professionals. The staff includes anesthesiologists, physician assistants in anesthesia, CRNA's and residents. Each anesthesia team is under the direction of an attending physician anesthesiologist.

CENTER FOR PAIN MEDICINE

The Division of Pain Medicine of the Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to the treatment of acute and chronic pain. Outpatients are seen in the Center for Pain Medicine (CPM) which is located in the Medical Office Tower of Crawford Long Hospital. Classified as a "major comprehensive pain center," the Center offers a multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of chronic pain of all types, including cancer pain. Professionals at the CPM include physicians, clinical psychologists, and physical and occupational therapists. The CPM sees over 5,000 patients per year and performs a wide variety of procedures for the treatment of pain. Pain in hospitalized patients is treated by the Pain Consultation Services at Emory University Hospital and Crawford W. Long Hospital. While the majority of inpatients have acute postoperative pain, the service also evaluates and treats patients with chronic pain problems who have been hospitalized.

CHILDREN'S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA AT EGLESTON

Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, a private, nonprofit pediatric hospital located on the Emory campus, has 250 medical and surgical beds and 40 intensive care beds. Every year more than 15,000 patients, from newborn to age eighteen, are admitted from all the southeastern states, and surgeons perform more than 9,600 procedures. Approximately 750 of these are open-heart procedures. The Egleston Anesthesiology Service is directed by faculty members who specialize in pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric critical care.

The Department of Anesthesiology has several divisions at the hospital: cardiothoracic and surgical specialty anesthesiology, pain medicine and critical care medicine. Twenty-two anesthetizing locations meet the needs of the 12,000 patients a year who require surgical procedures at Emory Hospital including approximately 800 cardiothoracic cases. Residents are involved in diagnostic radiologic procedures, therapeutic nerve blocks for patients suffering acute and chronic pain, and anesthesia for patients undergoing heart, liver, pancreas, and kidney transplants.

BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH FACILITIES

The Robert W. Woodruff Health Sciences Center and the Department of Anesthesiology enjoy an international reputation in basic and clinical research.

Basic research laboratories are equipped with state of the art equipment for the investigation of a wide variety of important problems related to anesthesiology. Faculty in the Molecular Anesthesiology Research Laboratories are conducting research in the role of oxygen and oxidative stress in the biology of stem cells and related research into erythropoietin-mediated neuroprotection, and muscle stem cell aging. The Labs also have efforts aimed at understanding of how general anesthetics alter fast inhibitory synaptic transmission, and GABA-mediated mechanisms of anesthesia. A new effort directed at the molecular mechanisms of peripheral neuropathies grew out of the clinician-scientist training program in the department. In conjunction with the Center for Cell and Molecular Signaling, there are additional neuroscience laboratories where faculty are studying signal transduction in neurosecretory cells at the molecular biology and single ion channel levels. Other faculty laboratories are involved in the study of the central and autonomic nervous systems, and cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal, and endocrine physiology and pharmacology. An analytical laboratory with a capability of analyzing all inhaled and intravenous anesthetic agents and many other types of drugs in biological specimens, as well as coagulation and inflammatory markers is available for supporting our diverse research efforts.

In addition to basic research, Anesthesiology faculty are involved in a wide variety of clinical investigations at all of our major facilities. The General Clinical Research Centers (GCRC) at Emory University and Grady Memorial Hospitals are available for studies of volunteers and outpatients. Areas of particular interest in the department include neuroprotection during cardiopulmonary bypass, suppression of coagulopathy during cardiac surgery, and optimization of pain management in chronic diseases. A bi-monthly research conference open to all members of the department serves as a forum for discussing clinical and bench research proposals at all stages of development.

ATLANTA VETERANS ADMINISTRATION MEDICAL CENTER

The Atlanta VA Medical Center is a 405 bed multi-specialty facility, caring for adult patients. The surgical population is diverse, with more than 49% over the age of sixty. This allows the Anesthesiology resident to concentrate on the opportunity of participating in the perioperative management of the multiple co-morbidities associated with elderly patients, who represent an increasing percentage of the general population. Skills required for operative anesthetic management of these challenging patients frequently include invasive hemodynamic monitoring, pharmacological support of physiologic parameters, fiberoptic airway management and combined general-regional anesthetic techniques. Selected cases require, for post-operative analgesia, epidural and peripheral nerve blocks. The case mixture includes cardiac, thoracic, vascular, orthopedic cases and major general surgery cases. The resident is also able to participate in the care of patients receiving electroconvulsive therapy, other non-surgical anesthetic care, and those patients needing emergent airway support in other areas of the Medical Center.
